Exactly what I’m thinking?
Information intermediaries and opinion making – a multi-method study using the example of Facebook
In the study “Exactly what I’m thinking? Information intermediaries and opinion making” by the Landesanstalt für Medien Nordrhein-Westfalen (LfM), the importance of information intermediaries and Facebook in particular in terms of opinion making was examined.
The central question was whether or not Facebook influences topic perception, opinion relaying and opinion making regarding political topics, and, if so, how effectively.
Material objects of investigation were, among others, the rank of Facebook in news reception compared to traditional mass media as well as the influence of the information intermediary regarding perceived topics.
Thus, the study’s findings delivered indications as to where regulatory measures for safeguarding of media pluralism should take effect.
The study was a joint project of the Landesanstalt für Medien Nordrhein-Westfalen (LfM) and the media convergence research focus of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, headed by Prof. Dr. Birgit Stark.
